Our Story |

Megan “Our Story” In the late afternoon of December 12th, Megan came into my home office, so excited to be going to a basketball game with a boy she cared so very much for and another one of his friends. She asked me three and four times if what she was wearing looked “stupid” and I reassured her several times that she really looked cute and was ready for the game. I also guilted her a little about not taking time to go Christmas shopping with me, as we only had twelve days left. She promised she would soon. She then hugged my neck, gave me a kiss and told me she would call me when she got to her friends house, as she always did no matter where she went. She always told us where she would be and who she would be with. Her step-father and I decided we would take this time to go out for dinner and finish our Christmas shopping for her. On our way to dinner, she called and we told each other that we loved each other and I wished her a good time and I would see her at 11:00 (her curfew). She was never late for curfew and if she thought she would be late, she would always call me. When my husband and I returned home from our evening, I put on my pajamas and got right to wrapping her presents. Around 10:30 I received a knock at our door. Not the doorbell….. a knock. At first, I thought it might be Megan home early from the game and I thought she had forgotten her keys. When I opened the door, there was a Missouri State Trooper standing there to tell me that our daughter was in an accident and she did not make it. I screamed and screamed until I was hoarse. “No, not my baby”! Our whole lives and everything that we thought was normal had changed forever! Our youngest daughter was dead and it was just twelve days before Christmas. We would not get to see her excitement when she opened our gifts. We would not see her in the Prom dress that she and I had found a month or so earlier. We will not get to see her enjoy being a senior in high school or see her graduate. We will not get to see her get married and have children. We are struggling now to find a new normal. A life that was forced upon us because the driver of the car she was a passenger in, decided on a cheap thrill and did a hill jump that went terribly wrong. All of them were wearing their seat belts. They did not drink or do drugs. In this case, the driver made a bad decision to speed up a hill and ended up over-correcting which impacted everyone that was riding in his car and ultimately took our daughters life. Teens, please, please do not think for one moment, that this CAN”T happen to you. It can! And parents, we are dedicating our lives to help educate other teens and their parents of the ongoing cause of teen deaths – CAR CRASHES. Won’t you please join us in our cause and help us to save another’s life?
